Add the Ubuntu Studio Backports PPA (ppa:ubuntustudio-ppa/backports).
If you're not sure how to do that, it's easy. Open a terminal, and type
this: 

  sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntustudio-ppa/backports
  sudo apt update
  sudo apt upgrade

Not only will you have the latest version of Ubuntu Studio Controls
(which will make Jack setup much, much simpler than using QJackCtl),
but you'll now be able to download and install Carla as well.

  sudo apt install carla

If you want the wine bridges, they're there too, but not by default.
for that, you'll want to search for carla in Synaptic and install them
there.

So, you can eat your cake and have it too!
