Thank you so much for your answer!

The noise is ever present in Linux as soon as it is initiated. The noise 
is slightly better the higher sample frequency in Jack, but even without 
jack there is static noise and crackles. I just realised that I I have 
not checked whether this is on the headphone outlets only - but this 
seems unlikely since we had the problem on the recording the other day 
even after exporting to another computer with another interface. I'll 
check it though.
