you're not wasting time.. but, you are troubleshooting many things at once,
and making assumptions. you cant assume that the USB bus power is causing
any issue here... what do i do??

when trying new gear, i load up one or more of the following live CD's..
AVlinux, ubntustudio's live CD's from the last LTS (12.04) the current
release (now 13.10) and (when available) the upcoming testing version (soon
to be the 14.04 LTS).. i do this to remove variables. takes my config and
customization out of the equation, and allows me to try anything knowing
that none of my changes will be saved or be able to permanently break
anything. i try with both JACK and pulse only. i try and play a known good
audio file in a player that im familiar with. then, i try getting
*anything* into the machine through the device into *anything*, not
limiting to ardour or whatever. no need to use a condenser microphone
requiring phantom power at this stage when you are just getting used to the
device. use the line out from a device that you know works and understand
well. use a dynamic mic that you know works.

the way i read your particular scenario is that you are just getting
familiar with linux and JACK and ardour, and you dont know anything about
that device you are borrowing. i would use the internal sound card to test
a scenario that works, then switch to the apogee for testing it in
particular.

also, if you are purchasing, consider not looking for "devices that work in
linux".. consider a device with official support for linux. RME has this as
far as i know. otherwise, there are great devices that will work with
linux, but "linux" doesnt, and cant gurantee support. cheers!
