You probably had to install vanilla Ubuntu, then install the Ubuntu Studio
packages.

Its the machines that are locked AFAIK. If you bought a machine from
system76 with ubuntu for example, you could install windows8 and recover
grub. From what I have heard, it depends on how the vendors of the machines
implement this feature. In some bios settings, the secure boot feature can
be disabled. I say, just don't purchase a machine that doesn't allow you to
do what you want to do. Cheers
