Ralf Mardorf <ralf.mardorf at alice-dsl.net> made some excellent points about
unix advocacy and bug fixing and tools.

I tried to fix that bug in audacity, as I'm a C programmer. But the
bug is a result
of a race condition in the software and was more complicated than I was capable
of fixing on my own.  I did offer some C patches for a couple of other features;
they were rejected because the features ALREADY EXISTED; however, there
was NO DOCUMENTATION of them so there was no way to know that I was
WASTING my time. I'm not all that happy with the audacity developers.

I do plenty of Linux advocacy, and occasionally win a convert, but mostly, that,
too, is a waste of time.

And as far as "right tool for the right job"; I won't use Windows,
period. If I can't
do it in Linux, then it doesn't need doing. I do run FreeBSD machines also, but
since most of the application software is the same, there isn't a
great difference
there.

Yes, total loss of volume control. But if I wanted to run Skype, I didn't see
a choice. Fortunately I don't use that laptop for entertainment, so
lack of audio
volume control was not a show stopper.
