let us know what hardware your using... are you using JACK? is this an
internal card? or a USB device?

you can run
lspci
in a terminal and paste that here, or
lsusb

i have a VIA sound device that just dies sometimes... what kernel are you
using?

uname -a

have you tried other kernels?
