dpkg crashes GNOME on UbuntuStudio 9.04

I have more information why it crashed (though not a lot).

I tried the command once more, and it crashed with a message:

Prior to this O/S I have run Ubuntu 8.04, OpenBSD 4.5, WinXP SP3, and
Solaris 10 on the same hardware without any problems.
