Well, Jack is at the heart of audio recording and routing in Linux.
As someone said, the Linux Audio slogan should read: Think differently.
Jack is the heartbeat of every (most?) Linux audio process.
It enables you to route the input signal were you want. Meaning, internal
(software) or external (hardware) devices.
It's really, really important that you understand Jack, so I suggest start
