Hi Margot,

This link is supposed to solve all your sound issues...  
Unfortunately, it didn't work for me, because my crappy old machine  
wouldn't recognize my atapi dvd drive for the desktop reinstall.  
Hopefully you'll have more patience & better luck than I.
