kernel 2.6.24-5-rt stalls & crashes

Has anyone else had trouble with the new Hardy kernel?
I have. The kernel is better than 2.6.24-4-rt, but that's not saying much. 
I keep getting hung up on simple applications such as OpenOffice and Firefox. 
I understand that this kernel is the new "tickless" kernel ?? (Is that right?) and that problems are expected, but I just wanted to make sure it wasn't me, for some reason. 
I'm running an Acer Ferrari 64 laptop using 32-bit libraries (so I can run WINE applications). 
I only have 1GB RAM. Does the new kernel require more?
