Ubuntu-Studio-users Digest, Vol 3, Issue 7

That bug report cleared up some of the mystery.
The file is called "Release", and it is in fact on my DVD.
This implies that the (new) drive reading the (new) DVD
just failed to find the "Release" file, either due to dust or
fingerprints or some physical problem, or because the
hardware (motherboard) I'm running on doesn't play nice
with the DVD drive and/or driver.

At any rate, I installed a basic Ubuntu from CD, then ran the script
(link to it posted earlier on this list) and now I have a more or less
working ubuntu-studio.
