There is a difference between the mainline kernel and the kernel that 
comes with Ubuntu. Sometimes from looking at the Ubuntu kernel it appears 
support for some hardware vanishes, but it is found that building a kernel 
with the right config still allows that hardware to be used.

For many artistic endevours a network connection is not required. I might 
also suggest that some of the newer hardware has built in security 
vulnerabilities that no OS upgrade will be able to fix. In fact the 
32bit/64bit line might be a good place to divide secure hw from insecure 
hw. So it may be safer to have a 32bit machine connected to the net with 
old sw than a 64bit machine connected to the net with the very latest sw.

Go figure...
