Tangostudio is based on a much older version of Ubuntu, version 10.04. Looks like a very pretty install of Ubuntustudio 10.04 with pulseaduo taken out, and the option to update to a newer kernel. They bypassed the whole GNOME desktop issue by doing so, but will fall behind in versions of audio software unless the writers of programs they install are careful to mantain the ability to build their packages against Ubuntu 10.04. Maybe this is why I didn't see Audacity in their published package list at all, though the version from Ubuntu 10.04 repos should work fine.

As such, these are two different projects: one seeks to optimize a known good OS for a single use, but will have problems on some newer machines (AMD bulldozer for instance), the other is updated at 6 month intervals synched to Ubuntu but has to deal with all new problems (GNOME desktop issue, etc) that come from upstream changes.
