Hullo,
Kevin Cole here. I'm not a student, but I work at a university. Back in
the dark ages, 6 BPC (Before PC, circa 1972) I was fortunate enough to
participate in a pilot program for high school students: The city was
going to attempt to teach computers in the classroom for the first time.
It changed my life. ;-)
Since then, I've always focused on the use of computers in academic
environments, with a special love for the kinds of students who refuse
to believe in the limitations imposed by their elders. ("That's impossible!
You can't get Unix to work on a personal computer!")
I started using Linux in '93 -- mostly Red Hat until Ubuntu came along.
I still like some of Red Hat and Fedora, and I hope to fool around with
Gentoo, but I recommend Ubuntu to all newcomers. I'm now the head of
the Brain-Washington DC LoCo team. Most of our membership is connected
with local high schools in some way -- either students or teachers.
Most of the DC crowd also tend to favor Python as a programming language,
although we vary a bit more in that area. A couple of students are running
Python projects on Launchpad. In particular
* GASP (https://edge.launchpad.net/gasp) and
* CanDo (https://edge.launchpad.net/cando
https://edge.launchpad.net/cando-project
https://edge.launchpad.net/timeclock)
Nice ta meet cha.
