Hey Brian,
I'd probably recommend using xchat at first just to get used to IRC,
since it's a bit friendlier with its nice graphical interface.
If you're on a system without X, then I'd recommend looking into
irssi, but a quick search for bitchx tutorials turned up
http://linuxreviews.org/software/irc/bitchx/ which looks helpful. The
key points are that you need to connect to irc.freenode.net as your
server, then join #ubuntu-gsoc.
Hopefully that gets you started, let me know if you run into issues!
