picocom terminates with FATAL error on Dapper Drake

Hi,
I am using picocom on two machines running Ubuntu Server Dapper Drake  
connected to each other over a serial connection (RS-232). On both of  
them I start picocom. Communication to one of them is ok - typing  
"hello" shows "hello" on the other screen. The other direction  
results in an immediate "FATAL: read from term failed: Resource  
temporarily unavailable" and picocom closes.

The hardware are one IBM Thinkpad and a Soekris net4801 with which I  
communicate over Ethernet/SSH.

Any idea?
