This appears fixed now:

ubuntu at trusty:~$ hostname
trusty
ubuntu at trusty:~$ dnsdomainname
test
ubuntu at trusty:~$ facter fqdn
trusty.test
ubuntu at trusty:~$ cat /etc/resolv.conf
# Dynamic resolv.conf(5) file for glibc resolver(3) generated by resolvconf(8)
#     DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE BY HAND -- YOUR CHANGES WILL BE OVERWRITTEN
search example.com
nameserver 10.0.3.1
ubuntu at trusty:~$ dpkg-query -W facter
facter	1.7.3-1ubuntu1
