I have a test package for you to try.

Add this ppa, https://launchpad.net/~peter-petrakis/+archive/storage

The install incantation should be:
apt-get install multipath-tools=0.4.9-3ubuntu5+lp1032250dbg1

It includes a fix to the state checker which *should* eliminate the sysfs coherency issue.
