It's quite weird that those have been here for so long, I feel one reason was to ensure that Gdk delivered the cursor changes, but that's definitely not the way to do it in Gtk.

So, let's drop these for sure.

Since you're there, could you also look at improving the state of https://git.launchpad.net/update-manager/tree/UpdateManager/UpdatesAvailable.py#n683 ?

That's another ugly code path. Using a GTask would be the way there, or in any case a notification from the working thread when things are done.
