I should clarify, that lsb_release is CURRENTLY guaranteed to be in minimal images:

$ apt-cache show lsb-release | grep Task
Task: minimal, server-minimal, cloud-minimal
$

However, it is still deprecated and shouldn't be used in new code.

Perhaps this?
