I've pushed a commit with updates to address these comments.

I've tested these changes by building the source package and a new image, confirming it boots with network connectivity and security updates enabled.

I believe ifupdown was chosen for xenial instead of systemd-netword or nplan because it makes for a smaller image? Though I am not entirely sure, and this would be a call that snapcraft would need to make, as they are the main stakeholders for this image.
