Where's the bug report? Complaining is nice, but generally not practical.

Well, if we want to be pedantic, it's not. GNU and all. As a FreeBSD user,
you should know better ;-) (disclaimer: I use Linux and UNIX, too).

Did you check if it's due to the OOM?

Yes, the user has a choice to download the source and fix or change
anything they like.
Barring that ability, bug reports are the way to alert developers to a
potential problem, through information gathering and general
troubleshooting.

I'm using awesome window manager. Installed it from the repos, too. The
choice is there.
If you're referring to old versions, they're there, too. It's a bit
difficult to do, but you can pin an old version and it won't be updated.
As with everything in the Linux/UNIX world, you can also compile from
source.

This is going on all the time, with every piece of software in the repos,
not to mention new software coming in from various upstream reservoirs.
Hope that helps you better understand how Ubuntu works and how you can help
get your problem resolved.
