Hi Everyone,

Welcome to the mailing list! I set this up about four or so hours ago
and in that time over 40 people have joined up. I appreciate you
joining, and for a bit of background for those who have not seen it,
take a look at my blog post at
http://www.jonobacon.org/2011/05/18/creating-an-ubuntu-power-user-community/

I have a firm belief that Ubuntu should be a welcoming community for
*everyone*, irrespective of your level of technical interest, and while
Ubuntu is certainly targeting non-technical end-users in the out of the
box experience, I think there is a huge scope to optimize Ubuntu for
those people who prefer more configurability.

Now, I set this list up in a kind of disingenuous way. I am not the kind
of person who tweaks his computer all that much, but I am tired of
seeing people suggest that Ubuntu is no longer suitable for power users,
so this is a first step in blowing away that myth. My goal here was to
raise the issue (the blog post), create a communications medium (this
mailing list), and to find a leader for the community who is interested
in growing a community of Ubuntu Power Users. Mike Basinger has
expressed an interest, but anyone is welcome to lead and inspire the
community.

To kick things off, I have a few ideas of things that could be
interesting for this community to work on:

      * Identity - I think just having a mailing list where people can
chat with other more advanced users will be healthy in
dispelling the myth that Ubuntu is only for simplistic
end-users. This mailing list can be a great vehicle for this.
      * Documentation - I think it could be interesting to have a docs
team who works with the Ubuntu Documentation Team to explain how
to hot rod your system to provide more configurability and
        flexibily around specific needs.
      * Easy Access to Configuration Tools - I think it could be awesome
to have a team of packagers who are providing either different
or unified configuration tools for advanced users. As an
example, imagine having a series of packages in the Ubuntu
Software Center or in a PPA, such as 'ubuntu-config-desktop',
        'ubuntu-config-boot', and 'ubuntu-config-kernel' which provide
tools for helping harness some of the underlying configurability
        of Ubuntu.
      * . . . - of course, there are many other cool ideas that could
grow ot of this community. Right now we need leaders who are
keen to take this community forward and share ideas. That could
        well be you. :-)

So, without further ado, who would like to participate in the above
goals and start rocking-and-a-rolling? :-)

	Jono
