[ubuntu-nz] 11.04 freezes when playing dvd

Hi all
got a odd problem.. as of 3 days ago my system freezes after about
1 Minuit of playing a dvd regardless of media player used .
the first symptom is the sound disappears, then the processor and ram useage
goes through the roof at which point the whole thing locks up .the only
option left is a hard restart ????? its only dvd playing that dose it
any clues .........
