I do appreciate that (except for the "dross" part), and support the
change, as I hope I've made clear.

This is a misunderstanding that I'm very keen to correct across the
Ubuntu community. On any Ubuntu team, members who are employed by
Canonical have exactly the same status as volunteer members. We are a
meritocracy and the position which individuals take up in different
teams is based upon their contributions and merit, not by their
employer.
(That isn't to say that Joey doesn't have, and thoroughly deserve, a
leading role in the Fridge team on the basis of contribution - he
definitely does. I just wanted to correct this misunderstanding.)
My observation on this thread has probably gone rather further than I
intended it to go. I made the comment more as a CC member with an
interest in community governance, rather than as an active contributor
to the team (which I'm not).
