Oops : that's a big issue.
It completely broke Lightning on the computers I take care of.
Reverting to Lightning 2.6.0 makes it work again. But Thunderbird still wants to upgrade it to 2.6.1 : this workaround will probably only work until Thunderbird checks the extensions for upgrade.

As explained by heinz-repp, the lightning version distributed by Ubuntu
is not localized (see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source
/lightning-extension/+bug/930589) so most people use the xpi from
mozilla
