Import VCF into Thunderbird is a feature which is not built into thunderbird. Looking up "import vcf" in Thunderbird add-ons does not display any results. The only developer who has put together a method to import contacts from VCF is kaosmos with the extension MoreFunctionsForAddressBook
(formerly MoreColsForAddressBook).

I do not understand why this is not a feature built into thunderbird.

The bug I faced when importing a vcf file from kabc
(kaddressbook/kontact/kmail) is that contacts were transfered over, but
mailing lists (grouped contacts) were lost. Not sure how to report this
to "MoreFunctionsForAddressBook" as it is not made available by mozilla
or through repositories.

kaosmos add-ons/extentions should be used by mozilla. Many of these
should be built into thunderbird.
