Me too... strace attached to running process provided the following,
usually only seen after thunderbird had been running for a bit (a few
hours)...

Disabling assorted plugins seemed to help alleviate, but not fix
altogether, I still have extensions check&send, quicktext and the
standard addon for openoffice. using default theme
