I've linked this to the most relevant bug on Mozilla's bugzilla, but
they aren't likely to implement the change suggested in here.

On the current (Maverick, Browser 3.6.12),
http://www.adobe.com/svg/demos/chart.svgz causes the browser to
recognise it as svg and prompts for an external application to open it
with.
