I have similar issues. Firefox is unusably slow (I mean it. I have
switched temporarily to Konqueror to work around the problem). Pages
with a large # of table rows seem to be the worst. Scrolling takes a
second or more to update.

My hardware is Nvidia, with an otherwise stable core2duo machine.

Software wise, I disabled all extensions except the Ubuntu extensions,
and had no improvement. Clearing my profile and generating a new one was
similarly useless. Running firefox in safe mode did not work either.
