Thank you for reporting this to Ubuntu.  Could you please try with a new profile?  
firefox -ProfileManager
You have a lot of extensions installed that might be interfering with the spell checker.  You do not need to delete your old profile to test.  If it is an extension, maybe you can help us narrow down which one is causing the issue.  This works for me in Firefox 3.0 and Firefox 3.5.
