The discussion was overwhelmingly in favor of NOT doing this.  If you're 
going to ignore feedback you don't like, please don't ask us to waste our 
time giving it.

I've filed Bug #262063.  One clear solution would be to simply revert this 
change.  I'm open to suggestions on a better approach.  In addition to 
being a technically poor choice, gratuitously forking a package from Debian 
is not helpful for Ubuntu's long term maintainability.
