Is Xfce user-friendly? I think Xfmedia would be a fine choice, as it
works just as well as totem-xine, but without crashing often or a lot
of UI quirks. I'm not sure how the situation will change in Dapper,
but I think including Xfmedia by default would be fine. After all,
Xubuntu isn't the best choice for one who is new to Linux and wouldn't
know how to change things on his own, right?

(Of course, I've not been able to run a fully functional Xfce
environment without introducing some GNOME dependencies--e.g. with
Evince, Nautilus, Gedit, etc.--so I think trying to avoid GNOME
dependencies as a rule is just striving after wind.)
