installation problem

I have this problem with my ubuntu OS. Im installing it well and when it displays the desktop it doesnt do anything else. It just displays the pointer and saty fro a long time without doing anything else. so can someone assist me on what to do bcoz i have tried all methods and seems to no vain.I have booted from cd many times and behaves the same way. I would be glad if someone can help me. Thanx
