There are two ways to join an irc channel - from the web, or from a
client (irc application). My favorite is Konversation; others use
hexchat, etc. Search for IRC in your sofware store or packagemanager.
Via the web, you can drop in using https://webchat.freenode.net/.
The keys to using IRC well are: read the topic (typing /topic on a new
line if necessary), and stay in the channel after you ask your
question. It is very frustrating to do some research, type out an
answer, and see that the questioner has left the channel.
