The other issue on this would be implementation - we do not control the IRC network directly and freenode does not currently have such an auto join feature.  This feature is usually specifically configured in individual IRC clients.  To enable auto join for this would require modification of the IRC clients' default settings to configure this.

Implementation issues aside, I agree with Jose's assessment on this - the factoid exists for this reason.
