Text around the illustrations should use normal HTML. Text inside the
illustrations should be avoided. alt= should have a non-empty value only
for images that communicate information distinct from the text, which
images in a slideshow almost certainly won't.

I don't understand what you mean here. What kind of "information" are
you trying to fit into the images?
I've attached a very quick sketch of what I suggest the slide show
should look like. Remember that most people will be paying only vague
attention, if any, so it should be really simple.
