I'm afraid I cannot tell from that description whether it will work, but
be aware that forum discussions are often out of date in some respects.
I recommend you simply try the Ubuntu 7.10 desktop edition:

  http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

If it fails to detect the hard disk, it will quickly become obvious (you
won't be able to get past the partitioning step), your computer won't be
damaged in any way, and you will be in an excellent position to file a
bug.
