You can validate if your audio works fine from other programs as well. For
eg, sound recorder which will appear in Application -> Sound & Video can be
used to validate that speaker and  mic are working fine (for more details

Same way, cheese (webcam booth) can be used to validate video is working
fine. You can install these programs from Ubuntu software centre if not
already installed. (for more details refer https://wiki.*ubuntu*.com/*
Webcam)*

I still not used audio/video on either empathy or pigdin, so I cannot
comment on them. Hope this helps.
