For eg, sound recorder which will appear in Application -> Sound & Video can be used to validate that speaker and mic are working fine (for more details refer <cite><a href="https://help">https://help</a>.ubuntu.com/community/Sound)</cite> Same way, cheese (webcam booth) can be used to validate video is working fine. You can install these programs from Ubuntu software centre if not already installed.
