Actually i installed it for him, only problem hs is 300 km away so the
best i can do is online support.

Yes /, /boot /home are all separate..

There is one HD divided somewhat like this
Windows 7 (ntfs)
Shared (ntfs)
/boot - ext4
swap
/root ext4
/home ext4

The order of the linux partitions may not strictly be as mentioned above.

He is able to use a live cd / dvd and work of the computer.

Windows 7 boots normally

He did update the computer (over broadband) so am wondering if grub
could have got messed  up.
