No that is because, Microsoft provides Windows as a complete package to
schools free of cost, and in many cases they also provide hardware for it.
If I am not wrong, there is tie up of Wipro-Microsoft to provide Hardware
and software to many schools. With such offers being made to schools, I dont
really see why schools will reject especially since they dont usually have
to deal with all the drawbacks of Windows. Occasionally, they will
re-install whenever their system gets effected by virus.
However, my niece studies in 5th std in Bangalore and she told me that they
use Fedora in their school with KDE as desktop environment. So I guess we
just need better packaging of Gnu/Linux based distribution for schools which
will work out of the box after installation and back it up with good local
support for schools. SchoolOS is a initiative to solve the first part of the
problem. Local GLUGs should take it up as a duty to spread SchoolOS in their
locality.
