Well I have been using 64 bit Ubuntu ever since i migrated from Opensuse 64
bit and i have not faced any of those nagging issues. Its as stable as any
OS can be, 32 bit or 64 bit.

As for the msg on Ubuntu site there is a whole lot of discussion going on on
Ubuntu forums. I personally believe, the msg is extremely misleading and
does not clarify what or why.

As for your friends issues, is it a dual boot - does he have similar issues
with the other OS. If not is the harddisk good, i.e bad sectors, old age
etc. I had similar issue with my system very recently and even posted a
query on this list, but no one responded. However i diagnosed the problem to
a loosened RAM card and now the system is as good as ever. Ask him also to
rum memtest on his RAM after checking for proper fit in the slot.

If its a laptop then, theres a lot more to consider.
