[ubuntu-in] multimedia query

hiimy name is Kumar Akshay and iam very new and a fresh user user linux.
Iam owing a sony vaio laptop and i have installed linux mint 6(felicia).

The problem that iam facing is that iam not able to play the video files,i
have downloaded all kinds of video player and i have also downloaded codecs
explicitly and saved them in their right location.
while playing any video file in some of the media player only sound is
played and the video and and when i play the file in media player such as
vlc it automatically gets shutdown.
