Hi!
You can trim startup programs from System--> Preferences--> Sessions/ Startup Programs. This may improve your boot time. Just take care about which programs you switch off.
To make Ubuntu faster you should see the book 'Ubuntu Kung Fu'. You may get an ebook version at http://www.ebooks-space..com/ebook/1223/Ubuntu-Kung-Fu:-Tips-Tricks-Hints-and-Hacks.html or you may consider it buying in hard copy. It should be priced around Rs 1500. 
Sorry, no idea about the dimming problem.
