to the original poster:
am responding to your query from my macbookpro 15", using ubuntu 9.04,
which i dual-boot into with macosx 10.5.7.
i've been tweaking and configuring this to my satisafaction and
delight for weeks.
everything just works, and the experience surpasses my experience with macosX.

beyond this, have also configured my reliance broadband+ to work for
