This has been discussed endlessly in this list and at many places on internet.
It all depends on how you setup your connection and your modem/router.
1. You can put your router in bridge mode and then configure the
connection client on your machine. This seems to be default because
the technician installing the connection does not know any other way.
Ideally the connection configured this way should just show as DSL
connection in NM. If it doesn't then some problem with NM or
configuration.
2. You can put the router in routed mode, configure connection on the
device and simply put your machine in DHCP mode (roaming mode in case
of NM). This is ideal setup in most of the situations and specifically
when you have more than one machines. This works perfectly with NM.
Take your pick.
