Nope, all KDE apps don't work well in GNOME or vice versa. There are
hell lot of bugs regarding crashing of KDE apps when using in GNOME.

after manually extracting and a few other tweaks. What's the use of
making so many distinctions? Why can't there be just 1 linux?
Linux is always one, but DE and WMs are many. This is because we
(FOSSians) believe that options are a form of freedom. 99% of people
change their desktop background frequently. People do not like to stick
with the same thing, or at least like to have some visual improvements
and changes. All do not like the way GNOME works, all do not like the
way KDE works. Thus users are always given the choices and freedom to
use what they feel comfortable using. In the past one year, I had
shifted between GNOME and KDE as my primary desktop 4 times. I like a
few KDE apps which I use in GNOME and vice versa with the GNOME apps as
well. What makes me keep going is this freedom to make my choices
whenever I feel like. And there are nicer things in the Desktop world
other than KDE, GNOME as well.
There is indeed a project which aims at integrating or at least making
the hard work of different DEs into one. Check
http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/ to know more.
