I don't really understand the use of having 2 desktops when all KDE apps work on Gnome and Gnome apps work on KDE

Moreover, All Debian apps can be installed on RHEL and vice versa, after manually extracting and a few other tweaks. What's the use of making so many distinctions? Why can't there be just 1 linux?
