Even i would suggest you to connect to a modem with
ethernet interface.
if u have ethernet interface in ur pc then pls call ur ISP to
give u a modem with ethernet interface.

in that case jus plugin and u will be connected to interface.

once u are conversant with Linux then u can try hacking around PPPoE.

i use such modem.
